Born as Jai Kishan Kakubhai Shroff, Jackie Shroff is one of the most versatile actors in Bollywood. Born as a poor child in a chawl in Mumbai, Jackie became a prominent face in the glam world and inspired millions of people with his rags-to-riches tale. The actor is known by many names, including the likes of Jaggu, Jaggu Dada, Jackie, Jai, and Jaikishan among others. However, now in an interview, the actor opened up about his journey from being called 'Jaikishan' to 'Jackie'.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Jackie Shroff spoke about how he came to be known by his stage name, ‘Jackie’. Talking about the same, the actor shared that his friends used to call him 'Jaggu dada', while his mother and father called him 'Jaggu' and 'Jaikishan' respectively. Revealing that he has many names, Jackie added:
“My mother used to call me Jaggu, my friends used to call me Jaggu dada, my father used to call me Jaikishan… Some used to call me Jai, others used to call me Kishan. I have many names, you can call me whatever you want, just say it with love.”
However, when the actor was asked how he came to be known as Jackie, he revealed that he got his name from a classmate who was from Hong Kong. Mentioning that his classmate felt that Jaikishan was a long name, so he shortened it to Jai-Ki, which later evolved into Jackie. In his words:
“I had a classmate in school, who came from Hong Kong or Dubai. He felt that Jaikishan was a long name, so he told me that we should have some fun with it. He started calling me Jai-ki, and from there, it evolved to Jackie. My name has kept changing, but I’m still the same.”
Jackie Shroff has a persona of his own. The man who never shies away from helping anyone, and is a true gentleman in real-life. He is a kind-hearted person from the inside and a true family man in his personal life. When Jackie was 10 years old, his brother died at the age of 17, and he has no other siblings. The actor was very close to his mother, and he misses her presence in his life even today. For the unversed, Jackie Shroff’s mother, Rita Shroff died of a stroke in 2014.
Jackie Shroff started his career by modelling for commercials. However, it was in 1983 when Indian filmmaker, Subhash Ghai launched Jackie with his famous movie, Hero, and since then, there has been no looking back for the actor. In his career spanning four decades, the 65-year-old actor has managed to sustain a high level of stardom. Jackie has been ageing like fine wine, and he's all set to grace the silver screen with his upcoming film, Life Is Good.
On the work front, Jackie Shroff was last seen in the film, Phone Bhoot.
