There are some celebrities, who make us believe that their love for cinema is beyond the fame and glamour it brings along. With sheer dedication and love for the art, they devote their whole life to bring their characters into existence. And one such celebrated actor was Irrfan Khan. His choice of films was often not counted as mainstream but his love for acting and effortless performances had made him one of the top-notched actors of Bollywood. Irrfan had stunned his audience with his stellar performance in his debut film, Salaam Bombay and since then, there was no looking back for this versatile actor. His other notable roles included Maqbool, Paan Singh Tomar, The Lunchbox, Haider, Piku, and Hindi Medium. The actor, who was an institution in himself, will always be remembered for his method acting. On April 29, 2020, the nation had woken up to one of the biggest shocks of the year. The news of Irrfan Khan’s untimely death had flashed in the headlines and his friends, colleagues and fans had stood numb in shock.
At an event organised by IFFI Goa to pay tribute to Irrfan Khan for his contribution to Indian cinema, his wife Sutapa Sikdar spoke a few words about her late husband. Standing on the stage along with her son, Babil, Sutapa talked about her theatre days and acting classes with Irrfan. Remembering Irrfan and praising his choice of films, Sutapa got emotional and thanked the fraternity for paying their respect to him. Irrfan's son, Babil too took to his IG handle and shared pictures from the event.
When Irrfan was preparing to earn his Masters's degree, he was invited to audition for the National School of Drama, New Delhi. Irrfan knew that it was his calling. He listened to his destiny’s call and left to audition for a scholarship. It was during one of the practice sessions when he noticed Sutapa Sikdar. She was learning the art of acting but wanted to pursue story and screenplay writing. Irrfan took the risk and introduced himself. Everything worked in his favour and they both became good friends. They both shared similar vibes and by the end of the term, they were in a steady relationship. It was Irrfan Khan's birthday on January 7, 2021, and his doting wife, Sutapa Sikdar had penned a long note throwing light on different aspects of his life. Starting her long note with a shayari, Sutapa had written, "Na muh chhupa ke jiye ham na sar jhuka ke jiye, sitamgaron ki nazar se nazar mila ke jiye, ab ek raat agar kam jiye to kam hi sahi, yahi bahut hai ki ham mish alenjala ke jiye. You never celebrated your birthday initially to my dismay then reconciliation then just a habit. You used to ask me when you were really young “why would you celebrate your birthday isn’t it one year less to your death day?” of course these were conversation when you had just ventured out from home from conditioning to exploration so you would question everything. I don’t remember what I answered you but today I want to answer so listen Irrfan I celebrate the day because how would I have met you if you were not born ..so I celebrate the day the nakshatras the tithi the grahas the alignment of the universe on that particular day which welcomed you in this planet. And now that you are in the infinite did you get some answers you always seeked? "
Sutapa had then talked about his absence and the fact that his city, 'Bombay' never sleeps. Her note can be further read as "Dark nights dim lights and sahir saab’s shayari would float in the air..some nights when the sleep finally would decide after one or two momentary yawns to hide behind the star so one star gazes and looks for sleep quietly. You are silent from within, it’s a long days end and last three years have really been with longest days .you are tired with incessant noise of anxiety worry curiosity etc etc ..you just stare at the dark night with occasional horns just enough to remind you that you are earth bound. Yes bombay never sleeps..sometimes so don’t you. I celebrate your birthday as I would not meet you if you weren’t born."
