Exactly a year ago, one of the most shocking news of actor Irrfan Khan’s untimely death had flashed on the news channels. Within seconds, social media was abuzz with emotional messages and RIPs for the versatile actor. Not just his family and friends, Irrfan’s untimely death is a personal loss for all his fans and April 29, 2020, will always be etched in our hearts as the day we lost one of the most amazing actors.

Born as Sahabzade Irrfan Ali Khan into a family of Pathans with Rajasthani ancestry, Irrfan was one of the versatile Indian actors. Irrfan had stunned his audience with stellar performance in his debut film, Salaam Bombay and since then, there was no looking back for him. Be it Ashok Ganguly in The Namesake, Billu in Billu Barbar, Wasiullah Khan in 7 Khoon Maaf, Saajan Fernandes in The Lunchbox, Roohdaar in Haider, Rana Chaudhary in Piku, Nirmal Kumar in Madari, or Champak Bansal in Angrezi Medium, Irrfan had put life into all of his characters. He had always embarked on the 'road less travelled' and had created his own path.

Today, i.e., April 29, 2021, marks the first death anniversary of Irrfan Khan and his elder son, Babil penned an emotional note for him. Babil took to his IG handle and shared an unseen throwback picture of his baba, Irrfan building his own table. Along with the picture, Babil wrote, “Chemo burns you from the inside, so to find joy in the simple things, like building your own table to write your own journals. There is a purity, I have not yet discovered. There is a legacy that has already been concluded by my Baba himself. A full stop. Nobody can ever replace him. Nobody will ever be able to.”

Babil also revealed how much he misses being his baba. Sharing that he would have built a space monument and travelled there with him, Babil continued, “To the greatest best friend, companion, brother, father, I ever had and ever will have. I love you so much, for the rest of this chaos we are choosing to call life. I miss you, more than all that shah-Jahan/mumtaz stuff; I would have built a space monument that could have taken us to the furthest parts of a blackhole singularity you were always intrigued by, but I would have been there with you Baba, and we could have gone together, hand in hand. (Exploring the last mysteries).”

In March 2018, Irrfan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour and a few days later, he had left for London for his treatment. He had returned in February 2019 for shooting the film, Angrezi Medium, and had flown back to London for another surgery. He had returned to India in September 2019 hail and hearty, but on April 28, 2020, the actor was admitted to Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital due to colon infection and was kept in ICU. On April 29, 2020, the actor had breathed his last and had bid adieu to his loved ones.

On March 28, 2021, Babil Khan had taken to his IG handle and had shared a video with his mother, Sutapa Sikdar, in which his mother could be seen helping him getting dressed up in his father's clothes for the Filmfare Awards. Along with the video, Babil had penned a heart-melting caption, in which he had revealed the reason why he hadn't prepared the acceptance speech on behalf of his father, Irrfan. His caption could be read as "Mamma dressing me up - So in my little speech while accepting baba's awards from @jaideepahlawat @rajkummar_rao @ayushmannk I basically said 'this is not my place to say anything. People always say that you cannot fit into your father's shoes, but at least I can fit into his clothes.'"
