Even if we are aware of the fact, we tend to ignore the expiry date of makeup products. A common myth is that there is no harm using product beyond expiry date. This is however not true. Usually, herbal products have a shelf life of three years from the date of manufacture, but cosmetics have a shorter shelf life.

Beauty expert Shahnaz Husain explains:

"All products have a shelf life and must not be used beyond their expiry date to avoid exposure to contamination and infection."

#2. Weddings mean bright makeup, especially in pinks and reds

Another common myth is to only have pinks or reds with your lehenga or saree. Riya Vashisht, makeup artist and owner, Riya Vashisht Salon and academy suggests,

"If your outfit is pink or red, you dont need more of it, rather, you need contrasting tones that give your face its own identity and dont look like an extension of the lehenga you're wearing. And if you're in summer tones of peaches, baby pink or yellow, then allow your face to look summery as well with gentle brush strokes on the cheek, a light foundation to even out the skin and soft eyes with a deep mascara - it looks more youthful and makes you a radiant bride”

Skincare expert Dr. Jamuna Pai of Blush Clinics tells you why:

#4. Lighter the shade of foundation, the fairer you'll look

Akriti Kochar, beauty and makeup expert, Oriflame India tells you the logic behind it.

#6. Your eyes/lips and the colour of your clothes should match

Expert Riya Vashisht tellus why it is not so,

“Make up is meant to enhance your look, not to fill in the remaining colours of a watercolour painting. So if you're in a bright yellow outfit which shimmers, your eyes don’t need to be shimmery yellow - rather, they can be subtle shimmer therefore making your face look gentle while the outfit gathers the compliments. And you don’t need pink lipstick just because its a pink outfit - look at yourself in totality. What’s the one signature element of your look - is it your clothes, your hair, your shoes or are those simple and it's your make-up. Let that decide what you put on your face rather than looking like the x'mas tree just walked into a party."

#7. You should never put oil on oily skin

Oils are packed with antioxidants Vitamin C and E, which fight free radicals and help reverse sun damage.

Ms. Rupal Tyagi, an aromatherapist, perfumer and Founder of Wikka, says,

“Even oily-prone skin needs hydration, adding oil can actually help the skin to produce less oil in the long run. When a person with oily skin uses a cleanser that removes all of the natural oils, the skin will overcompensate by producing more oil. So adding a little oil will make the reverse happen.”

#8. Makeup causes break outs

Ms. Rupal Tyagi helps us understand why,

“Makeup is not always the main factor for breakouts and bad acne, most of the time it is due to a bad make-up routine. The main cause of likelihood of a breakout is sleeping with your makeup on, using out-dated products or not using clean brushes and sponges to apply makeup. Removing makeup is essential for the long-term health of your skin and will keep you looking fresh-faced and flawless every morning."

#9. Applying foundation and face creams in upward strokes will help you avoid wrinkles

Ms Rupal Tyagi suggests,

“Whether you like it or not, appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are not liked by anyone, and applying your make-up in a specific way is not going to stop its formation. Everyone’s skin is elastic, it will bounce back when stretched. No amount of applying foundation carelessly will cause wrinkles. In fact, it is better to apply foundation and face creams in a downward motion as this follows the natural direction of hair growth and will ensure a smooth finish.”

#10. Primers are not required if you moisturise your skin and apply your foundation properly

Truth is primers help foundation to stay in place longer, fill into fine lines, minimise the appearance of pores and prevent the skin from absorbing pigment. As we age, primers become even more necessary. Therefore, primer should be applied after moisturising and before applying foundation.

Myths are nothing but a barrier to apply correct application. Knowing the facts, will definitely give you an enhanced look. You should research and know your ingredients to have a princess look.
