How To Invite Your Colleagues To Your Wedding

The most important day of your life is fast approaching, and you are all occupied planning and trousseau shopping. While making the guest list, you think about your office and your colleagues. Should you invite them all? Would one common invite be okay for all? These and many such questions pop in your head.

The fact is that although you don’t HAVE TO invite everyone at work, there are some that you just cannot avoid. After all you would not want to look silly later. The rule here is- there are no rules! Simple. However, you must consider some things before inviting your colleagues.

Keep your wedding babble to the least

The most important and the basic thing to do is to cut down on your chatter about the wedding. Not only will it keep the air professional, but also save you from awkward questions from people you do not plan to invite. You can always share your excitement with those close to you during the lunch break.

Who is on the list?

You need to decide the people who you would really want to attend your wedding. You definitely do not want your office guest list to be longer than your close friends. If you have been working at the office for a couple of months or less, and are not close to your colleagues, you might not even want to bother inviting everyone. On the other hand, inviting your colleagues can be a great way to make good friends. It can start with a formal invitation in the office itself, but will be a great ice-breaker. In case you are planning to leave the job soon, consider who you will actually be in touch with later. Make sure to invite your boss (for obvious reasons), whether you like or not.

Stay away from sending 'secret invites'

If you work in a large company, there might be only a few that you would actually want to invite. You are free to invite or not invite anyone you wish to, the only rule is- do not be too secretive about it. Deliberately avoiding the ‘wedding’ topic, secretly inviting 2-3 people and asking them to keep it a secret, or avoiding the wedding discussion with those who are not invited; are invitation to awkward situations. Remember that you all work in the same office, and such “secrets” do come out in the open sooner or later. Since your wedding is not going to be secret, you can casually talk about it in case someone asks something.

Stay away from 'save the date' conversations

You might insist on your colleagues to attend your wedding, and even assert for them to “save the date”. You might do this repeatedly to make them feel more ‘invited’ and important. However, this can create uncomfortable situations for some. In case they are not able to make it for some reason, they might feel obligated to come up with an uncomfortable apology. So, no matter how much you want them to attend the event, keep your tone casual and not forceful or demanding.

While actually inviting

Isn’t handing out invitation in office plain tacky? It might make your colleague feel that the invite is just for the sake of it. Mark the people you wish to invite on your main guest list. So, if possible you can visit their home and personally invite them. If there isn’t enough time for that, you can personally go to their desk or cabin and spare 5 minutes for a quick cordial chat. In any case, do not ‘distribute’ invitation cards like flyers! You can even go with the current trend of creating an online invite. There are many portals that offer this service for free, where you can just choose your preferred templates and send out attractive invites. This is hassle-free and can be done in your own time.
