The Name Game After Marriage

Traditionally, women have always taken their husband’s surname post-marriage. But, these days brides are now opting to keep their maiden surnames with them. Moreover, they are also considering multiple options such as name combinations.

Even, Vidya Balan, Bollywood’s ‘gutsy’ beauty has recently put a full stop to the rumours of adding her husband, Siddharth Roy Kapur’s surname to her name. The actress said, “I don’t know who said that (I am changing my name to Vidya Balan Roy Kapur.) I remain Vidya Balan. I think Sid (Siddharth) and I both feel that since he will remain Siddharh Roy Kapur and not become Siddharth Balan Roy Kapur, so I will remain Vidya Balan and not become Vidya Balan Roy Kapur.” So, let us take a look at the name game every bride faces after her marriage.

My Name My Choice

Your name has been your identity ever since you were born. It is the name you are recognised with, both at your school and workplace. And, most importantly, your official documents too have your maiden surname. And suddenly because you got married, letting it go and taking on your husband’s surname can really be a tedious transition. But, if you decide to keep your name after marriage, well more power to you (as some in-laws might find it difficult to accept). And, if you are in a dilemma, read on to explore some really good options.

Multiple Choices

  • The most popular choice is to use your maiden name as your middle name and add your husband’s as the last name. So, if Simran Singh marries Raj Malhotra, she becomes Simran Singh Malhotra.
  • You can also use your last name in an abbreviation before your husband’s surname. That means Simran Singh becomes Simran S. Malhotra.
  • Many working women do not like to change their surname owing to their 'official' identity. If you also fall under this category, you can take your husband’s name legally. And, can use your maiden name at work to avoid confusion with clients or while doing business.

Make it Official

Your choice will be your identity for the rest of your life, so you need to be comfortable with it. And, if you decide to change your surname, go about it systematically. As you will need to change it on all the official documents.

Whatever you decide, make sure your husband is on board. You will especially need his support, if there is a conflict with your in-laws over not taking their surname. So, what is your decision?
