Bollywood continues to be an essential part of our lives. It affects so many of our lifestyle choices, including our sense of style, fashion, the cars/bikes we buy and health & fitness trends. However, more than any of these influences, Bollywood has been eternally linked with igniting passionate feelings of romance in our hearts. To be precise, some Bollywood couples, i.e. on and off screen, are looked upon as the epitome of love.
Today, on Valentine’s Day, we try to list some of the most influential Bollywood pairs in this niche:
The Olden Goldies: Raj Kapoor & Nargis
They appeared together in some black and white movies but their chemistry made watching them ever so colorful. Raj Kapoor was largely known as a lady’s man, having courted many controversies and compliments. However, none of his leading ladies could match the kind of chemistry he shared with Nargis. It isn't about this pair huddled together under an umbrella, singing an evergreen number but how their eyes spoke to each other. During that time, background music was used minimally and cameras would provide numerous close-ups. Every time the lens zoomed on Raj Kapoor and Nargis, the moment exuded such powerful passion, albeit in a restrained manner.
Machismo Meets Grace: Dharmendra & Hema Malini
Dharmendra was the Indian Marlon Brando to many, perhaps the first Bollywood actor to engage attention with his raw masculinity. Quoted as the “He-Man” of his era, Dharmendra had this earthy, rugged appeal. On the contrary, Hema Malini was grace personified. Hardly ever dressing provocatively, she still managed to capture hearts clad in her elegant sarees. Their romance blossomed on and off-screen. Every time, they appeared as a pair, it seemed as if there was no hint of acting. To many, it was a case of opposites attracting each other.
Young & Foolishly in Love : Neetu Singh & Rishi Kapoor
If there was ever a real and reel Bollywood pair chosen for being impulsively romantic, Neetu Singh & Rishi Kapoor would probably win. Neetu was the eternal bubbly girl, charming audiences with her innocence. Rishi looked fully capable to carry on the Kapoor Khandaan’s legacy. Their whirlwind romance occupied space in many tabloids. On-screen, they looked lost in each other’s eyes. Even today, when they stand together for shutterbugs, everybody is left wishing that their romance could last so long too.
Intense & Fiery: Amitabh & Rekha
Perhaps, the most controversial Bollywood romance of all times, this had the makings of a masala Bollywood thriller. The much-married Big B couldn’t resist the temptress, Rekha. Their personalities seemed made for each other, both intense and exuding passion. Whenever they were paired in movies, it was obvious that their love had blossomed despite the social and moral restrictions. For those who might not know what I am referring to, just watch the song—“Dekha ek khwaab to yeh silsilay hue”. This pairing just proved that you cannot choose love, you fall into it.
Princess Meets Prince Charming: Saif & Kareena
Among contemporary Bollywood couples that convey an aura of everlasting love, Kareena & Saif are probably unchallenged. In many ways, this pairing makes a lot of sense. Both of them boast of a proud lineage, have an air of affluence about them and relate to the finer things in life. Unlike Kareena’s earlier link-ups, this time she seems to have found an equal. Saif doesn’t look subdued in her presence. Often walking the ramp as a couple, Saif & Kareena display that unmistakable feeling that yes, this man and woman make absolute sense, being together.
