The Problem Of Weight Gain After Marriage

However hard you try, you are bound to put on weight after marriage and once the baby is on the way, you can say goodbye to all those sexy dresses and skirts.

This is the most common MYTH in our society which sadly becomes a fact because majority of women after marriage pay very little attention to their eating habits and absolutely no attention to fitness. I do not discount the problem of ever protruding belly of the married men, but right now we’ll focus on the problem of weight gain after marriage in case of women.

Flab, Flab, Why the Flab?

Putting on weight after tying the knot is a lifestyle-related phenomenon. The main reasons for this are:

Newly married women are no more looking to impress someone or find a husband, and therefore there is no need to follow strict diet regimes or workout religiously. Oh no-no, don’t roll your eyes, am not being presumptuous – this is precisely how the Indian society functions. Moreover, many of the would-be brides take up the crash diet programs in the months leading up to their marriage. They are obviously not able to follow these programs after marriage, which results in a lot of weight gain.

Travelling, partying and eating out become a lifestyle norm for some weeks after marriage. Avoiding rich high calorie food becomes really difficult, even if you want to, because you do not have low calorie options. Anyway it sounds criminal to eat lettuce salad and apples on one’s honeymoon, right? The end result of the weeks of revelry is very visible gain in weight.

Brides cook nice delicacies with liberal amount of ghee, butter, paneer, cheese etc. to impress their husband and in-laws. The thought of cooking low-carb nutritious food doesn’t even occur in the effort to be appreciated and accepted.

Wives also try to accustom their eating habits to that of their husband, like cooking what he likes the most and eating late together etc. This lack of attention towards one’s nutrition routine takes a toll on the fitness level.

As mentioned earlier, there is hardly any room kept for exercising or workout in the daily routine for at least 3-4 months after marriage. Then one day, Red Alert:  the flab on your abdomen shows conspicuously through that trendy top you picked a week before your wedding and you ask the question every husband dreads the most, “Darling, do I look fat?”

All these factors stated above do not even include the pregnancy period where women have the perfect excuse to put on weight and leave every fitness caution to the wind.

Get up, Get Moving

You know how difficult it is to lose weight, right? Compromising on your body, especially after working so hard to tone it up for that Caribbean honeymoon, is not at all the thing to do. Pay attention to what you eat, focus on low calorie food (fruits and salads are available everywhere and in all parts of the world), keep aside at least 15-30 minutes every day for moderate workout and chalk out a fitness regime soon after you feel comfortable and confident in your new role. You can even take up a new activity with your partner, like jogging, swimming, spinning or walking, which will also allow you to spend more time together.
